Join the Church of your choice–what’s implied?

When one hears the statement made: “Join the Church of your choice,” just what does this imply? I believe the main thing that anyone can deduce right off is that this means that Jesus the Christ established more than one Church. Is that biblical?  In Matthew 16:16-18 one reads the following:

“Simon Peter answered and said ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter (Petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build My church [singular], and the gates of Hades shall not be victorious against it.”

It seems strange that our Lord bought but one church with His blood yet so many “Christian” churches exist today.

In my next post we will explore the biblical use of the word “church.”
